VoIP runs over your broadband — make sure yours is ready

All three options need a reliable internet connection. Standard consumer routers almost never have a phone port — so if you want to keep your analogue phones, we'll supply either a voice-ready broadband router (if you need new broadband) or a small ATA adapter that plugs into your existing router. We configure both remotely, so no engineer visit is usually needed. We'll check your setup as part of your quote.

What your business needs to check before January 2027

📞

Phone lines & extensions

Identify every phone line you have — including lines you might have forgotten about like fax lines or backup lines.

🔒

Alarm & security systems

Fire and intruder alarms with phone diallers will stop working. Check with your alarm provider — most can be upgraded with a 4G module.

💳

Card payment terminals

Some older PDQ machines dial out over a phone line. Check with your payments provider whether yours needs upgrading to IP or 4G.

🌐

Broadband connection

VoIP needs a reliable broadband line. If you're on FTTC with a traditional phone line, we'll check it's voice-ready — or upgrade it as part of your migration.

🛗

Lift & door entry phones

Emergency phones in lifts and door entry systems often use PSTN. Contact your maintenance company — these need upgrading separately.

Power resilience

Unlike old PSTN phones, VoIP phones need mains power. If the power goes off, so does your phone. Consider a UPS (battery backup) for critical lines.

Which migration option interests you?

PSTN switch-off questions answered

Yes — in almost all cases your existing number can be ported to a VoIP system at no charge. Number porting typically takes 7–14 working days, so plan ahead. As migration demand increases through 2026, porting queues may lengthen.
Yes — but you'll need either a voice-ready router or an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter). Standard broadband routers almost never have a phone port, and even those that do are difficult to configure for VoIP remotely. We supply and remotely configure either option: a voice-ready router if you're also taking broadband from us, or a standalone ATA adapter that plugs into your existing router. Any analogue handset then plugs straight into the router or ATA and works exactly as before.
VoIP runs over your existing internet connection — if you already have a reliable broadband line, it will usually work fine. However, if your broadband currently comes bundled with a traditional phone line (FTTC with WLR), that product will be discontinued. We'll check your connection as part of your quote and supply a replacement if needed — often for less than you're paying now.
Fire and intruder alarms that dial out over a phone line will stop working after the switch-off. Most alarm systems can be upgraded with a 4G or IP communications module — contact your alarm maintenance company. Don't leave this until late 2026 when engineers will be very busy.
Unlike old PSTN phones which could work during a power cut (powered from the exchange), VoIP phones require mains power. During a power cut, your VoIP system will go offline with your router. For businesses with critical communication needs, a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for your router is worth considering. The GoYap app on a smartphone works over 4G/5G as a fallback.
The GoYap app option can be set up in minutes — no engineer needed. Broadband with a new router typically takes 2–4 weeks from order to installation. Number porting takes 7–14 working days. Allow 4–6 weeks for a smooth migration with time to test. If you're a larger business with multiple sites, allow longer — and don't leave it to late 2026.
